Deep Brain Reorienting
DBR is a trauma modality developed by Dr. Frank Corrigan in Scotland, whose extensive trauma work and knowledge of neuroscience led him to develop this revolutionary way to process trauma. This modality goes below the Cortex, ie-thinking brain, and helps the brain process below the fight/flight/freeze responses we know and targets the midbrain, the noticing brain. This allows the brain and body to move through and process the tension, shock and affect that happens in a milliseconds. We slow down the brain to be able to process what it was unable to at a subcortical level. This is especially helpful for preverbal trauma, those with dissociative disorders and early attachment trauma, as those experiences are primarily before the cortex is fully developed and before there is a conscious memory of the event.
EMDR
Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing is a bottom up modality developed by Francine Shapiro in 1987. Francine noticed while walking in a park that not only were her trauma clients able to stay more grounded when they walked and talked, but the bilateral movement also decreased the distress of the traumatic event being talked about. This led her to develop EMDR as a way to target conscious thoughts and events that were distressing and traumatic and help the body metabolize the trauma. This modality works great for traditional PTSD, where there is a major traumatic event that disrupted life. This can also be modified for complex trauma depending on the level of dissociation.
